Inlays and Onlays
What are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are restorations that enhance and perfect your existing teeth. They can be used to replace or in place of fillings. If you have a large area of decay or have a large filling, we can restore the area with either of these restorations. Inlays sit more inside the cusps and grooves of a tooth while the onlay sits over the very top of the tooth.
Why are Inlays and Onlays needed?
There are several reasons and uses for both inlays and onlays. If you’ve cracked, chipped or broken a tooth only on the very top, a crown is too large and not necessary when it comes to repairing the damage. Instead, an onlay can be placed to cover the damaged area. Inlays are best suited to teeth that have large fillings or areas of decay that need to be restored.
What makes you a candidate for Inlays and Onlays?
It’s not uncommon for a patient to request an inlay or onlay because of how long-lasting these restorations actually are. Most of them can last for two or more decades before replacement is needed. Because inlays and onlays are custom made for the patient, they’re more comfortable and offer a more even bite. We can examine your teeth to determine if you may need an inlay or onlay.
What happens during the procedure for Inlays and Onlays?
We begin by removing decay or old filling material from the tooth itself. Impressions are taken and will be used to make the actual restoration. You will come back for a second visit to have the new restoration placed. The fit and bite of the inlay and onlay is adjusted to ensure that it is comfortable for you. Your brand new restoration will last for many years without needing special treatment. We can even use these restorations to replace old amalgam (metal) fillings as needed.
