Dental Crowns (Ceramic / Porcelain)
What are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a restoration that can help to cover and enhance a damaged tooth. Crowns are made specifically for each patient, so they’re comfortable and fit perfectly. They can be used to cover a tooth that has broken or cracked, or one that has a large area or decay or filling in it. Crowns are durable and long-lasting, with many lasting for years and even decades before replacement is necessary.
Why are Dental Crowns needed?
The reason you may need a dental crown is because you’ve cracked, broken or fractured a tooth. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but it is a lot more common than you might think. Another reason for needing a crown is because a tooth was recently root canaled or has a large filling in it that is compromising the integrity of the tooth itself. The crown is fitted over the tooth to help prevent further damage and the need for an extraction.
Who is a candidate for a Dental Crown?
We will examine the tooth that may need a crown to determine if the restoration is necessary. Crowns are one of the most common restorations placed around the world. In fact, most patients will have at least one crown placed in their mouth at some point in their lives. If you need a crown, it is important to have it placed sooner rather than later to prevent further damage to the tooth.
What happens during the Dental Crown procedure?
The procedure begins with a localized anesthetic used to numb the area. We then file down the tooth completely to create a solid foundation for the new crown. Impressions (molds) are taken and used to make the actual crown. We offer both ceramic and porcelain crowns, and can go over the options with you before the crown is made. You will then come into the office to have the permanent crown placed. We adjust the fit and bite of the new restoration and you’ll be well on your way to enjoying your smile.
